Ericsson Suffers in North America, to Cut Costs Further

Ericsson Suffers in North America, to Cut Costs Further

Sweden’s Ericsson said sales in North America, its biggest market, had fallen in the past three months, identifying another of its weaknesses after the mobile telecom equipment maker’s dramatic profit warning last week.

The company, the world’s biggest maker of mobile network equipment, also said it would introduce further cost-cutting to deal with a weaker mobile broadband market.

Ericsson shocked investors last week when it issued the profit warning – indicating a plunge of more than 90 percent in quarterly operating profit and tumbling sales.

The Swedish company is struggling with a drop in spending by telecoms companies, with new 5G technology still years away, and facing stiff competition from Finland’s Nokia and China’s Huawei.

The 8 percent reduction in North American sales was the second consecutive quarter of falls and was worse than expected, according to a SEB research note.

That decline was mainly due to lower sales in Professional Services – the business that supports and helps maintain networks.

Sprint Corp, operator of the fourth largest US mobile network, renegotiated a managed services contract with Ericsson in July, cutting its value by around 50 percent after the previous $5 billion, 7-year agreement expired.

US sales were also dragged down by one customer’s lower spending on mobile broadband, the company said, without giving details.

Ericsson had said last week that sales fell most in markets with weakening economies such as Brazil, Russia and the Middle East. Sales in Europe were hit by the completion of mobile broadband projects in 2015.

Adding to its troubles, the company has been without a permanent CEO since ousting Hans Vestberg in July.

Weak market
Ericsson shares, which plunged around 20 percent on last week’s profit warning, hit 8-year lows on Friday, down by as much as five percent on news of the broad decline in sales across nearly all business areas, weak cash flow and a poor near term outlook.

Year-on-year sales declined in most regions, including Europe, India and mainland China – with the only exception being South East Asia and Oceania. But the company blamed the overall weak global market.

“In our view we have not lost market share, but this is market driven,” acting CEO Jan Frykhammar told Reuters. Some analysts took issue with this, saying details in the poor company results showed specific problems for Ericsson.

Nokia is due to publish its quarterly results on October 27 when a broader picture of the market will emerge.

Nokia’s third quarter revenue is seen at EUR 5.9 billion ($6.4 billion), up 3 percent on the previous quarter. Ericsson sales fell six percent from the previous quarter.

“We will implement further short-term actions mainly to reduce cost of sales, in order to adapt our operations to weaker mobile broadband demand,” Frykhammar added in a separate statement.

Having been slower to cut costs than recently merged rivals Nokia and Alcatel Lucent, Ericsson has now announced plans to axe thousands of jobs, but analysts said third-quarter results showed the challenges facing the firm as it looks for a new leader.

There was no update on the search for a permanent CEO. The company could try to hire a chief executive with no track record in the telecoms industry after looking beyond the obvious candidates.

Ericsson’s operating profit in the quarter fell to SEK 0.3 billion ($33.7 million) from SEK 5.1 billion a year ago, a 93 percent fall, while sales dropped 14 percent to 51.1 billion, the company confirmed on Friday.

iPhone 7 Reportedly Catches Fire Inside Surfer’s Car

iPhone 7 Allegedly Bursts Into Flames and Damages Car; Apple Said to Be Investigating Incident

After the many reports of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones catching on fire which ultimately led to Samsung discontinuing the flagship, it now looks like Apple’s iPhone 7 is following a similar fate. Mat Jones, a surfer from the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia captured footage of the aftermath of a car fire, which he alleged was caused by his iPhone 7.

7 News reports that Jones had left his phone under a bunch of clothes in his car while he went to surf. He returned to find his car filled with smoke, with the phone having ignited and damaged the interior of the car.

“Ash was just coming from inside the pants which then, once you unwrapped the pants, the phone was just melting inside of it,” Jones told 7 News. Jones asserted that the iPhone 7 was a week old and was in no way damaged prior to the fire and he had not used a foreign charger.

Apple is reportedly aware of the incident and is investigating the reason behind the phone igniting. This isn’t the first such incident related to Apple’s newest iPhones. In late September, it was reported that aniPhone 7 Plus had exploded in transit, before even reaching the user.

So far, the incidents are still too few to expect a major recall on the scale of Samsung. However, such events only add to the alarming cases of lithium-ion batteries exploding and raise the question as to just how safe devices with these batteries really are.

Only time will tell if the latest incident is a one off or if Apple’s latest iPhones, much like the Galaxy Note 7, have missed certain quality checks along the way.

Telecom News Vodafone, Tata Teleservices Pay Rs. 12,499 Crores to DoT for Spectrum Purchase

Vodafone, Tata Teleservices Pay Rs. 12,499 Crores to DoT for Spectrum Purchase

Telecom operators Vodafone and Tata Teleservices Wednesday made payments of Rs. 10,100 crores and Rs. 2,300 crores, respectively, to the government for spectrum they bought in the recently-concluded auction.

The two telecom companies made the payment to theDepartment of Telecom (DoT), a day before October 20, which is the last date for making spectrum payment.

Vodafone, which emerged as the most aggressive bidder in the recent spectrum auction, paid Rs 10,100 crore under the deferred payment option, which involves part upfront payment and balance payment in ten yearly instalments after a two-year moratorium, DoT sources told PTI.

In the case of deferred payment option, telecom operators are required to pay 50 per cent of the bid amount upfront for spectrum bought in 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, and 2500MHz bands, and 25 percent of the bid amount in the case of spectrum in the 800MHz band.

Vodafone also paid a financial bank guarantee of Rs. 1,900 crores, sources added.

The country’s second-largest telecom operator had made bids worth Rs. 20,280 crores to acquire spectrum in all its key telecom circles across 1800, 2100 and 2500MHz bands, and its overall spectrum spend placed it ahead of other rivals such as Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and the newcomer Reliance Jio.

Tata Teleservices also made its spectrum payment today. The company – which had fought fiercely to protect its spectrum holding in three circles, including the highly-lucrative Mumbai market – paid about Rs. 2,300 crores to DoT for airwaves it bought in the recent auction.

When contacted, both Vodafone and Tata Teleservices declined to comment on the issue.

Tata Teleservices bought airwaves worth Rs. 4,619 crores in circles of Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh in 1800MHz band, during spectrum auctions which concluded recently.

It was crucial for the Tata Group company to get spectrum in the Mumbai and Maharashtra circles as its licence in these lucrative circles is set to expire next year.

The spectrum auction – which was touted as India’s largest sale of mobile airwaves – ended on October 6 after merely five days of bidding and garnered bids of just Rs. 65,789 crores against an expectation of Rs. 5.6 lakh crores, leaving nearly 60 percent of airwaves, including premium 4G bands, unsold.

Bharti Airtel, the nation’s biggest telecom company, bought Rs. 14,244 crores worth of spectrum, while Idea Cellular put in Rs. 12,798 crores of bids.

Newcomer Reliance Jio spent Rs. 13,672 crores on spectrum buying. Other operators which bought spectrum included RCom (about Rs. 65 crores) and Aircel (Rs. 111 crores).

Uber Raises Fares by Up to 100 Percent Within Delhi NCR

Uber Raises Fares by Up to 100 Percent Within Delhi NCRNew price revision only valid within Delhi NCR
UberGo rates see up to 100 percent hike in fares
UberX fares also receive a bump
Uber has announced raise in its operating prices within Delhi and NCR. With the new changes, UberGo fares will be raised by up to 100 percent. The company announced the news in a blog post saying that the revised fare structure will be applicable for trips longer than 20 kilometres.

With the price revision, UberGo rate for up to 20 kilometres will Rs. 6/km while rate after 20 kilometres will be Rs. 12/km. Likewise, taking an UberX for up to 20 kilometres will cost you Rs. 9/km while the rate will go up to Rs. 13/km after 20 kilometres.

Announcing the price revision, Uber India noted, “To ensure a reliable ride when you are travelling long distances within Delhi NCR, we’re introducing a revised fare structure for trips longer than 20km. The change aims at ensuring you get a ride when you need one by justifying economics for our driver-partners.”

Uber claims that the new price revision is a “marginal increase in pricing” and the company still offers the “most affordable ride.”

To recall, Uber competing against Ola’s Micro service back in June cut its rate to just Rs. 6 per kilometre. Previously, UberGo fares in Delhi started from Rs. 8 per kilometre.

Last month, Uber announced the availability of the Schedule a Ride feature that allowed users to book an UberX or UberGo ride from 15 minutes to up to 30 days in advance.

Google to Start Adding ‘Fact Check’ Tag to Accurate News Articles in Search Results

Google to Start Adding 'Fact Check' Tag to Accurate News Articles in Search Results
Factually correct articles will bear ‘Fact check’ tag next to them
Google will check if websites are conducting fact checking on their own
It is currently rolling out in the US and the UK
How many times have you been proven wrong among your friends because something you said was factually incorrect? You then actually doubt your knowledge and regret referring to some random article on the Internet. Well, this happens to almost everybody who easily trusts anything that is available on the Web without scrutinising it thoroughly. But now, Google is coming forward to help you save from that embarrassment. Google will now start showing you whether an article is factually correct or not by tagging it with the ‘Fact Check’ label in search results.

Readers will start seeing the tagged articles in the expanded story box on as well as in the Google News & Weather iOS and Android apps, starting with the US and the UK, Google said in a blog post on Tuesday.

Google says organisations like International Fact-Checking Network and others are making continuous efforts to fact check articles, misinformed topics, sensationalised headlines, and other Internet hoaxes rigorously. By collaborating with them, Google aims to provide you almost accurate long news stories in the categories of health, politics etc. The websites that have correct and accurate information will be stacked in Google’s database, and will show you a visible ‘Fact Check’ label in the news section.
“In the seven years since we started labelling types of articles in Google News (e.g., In-Depth, Opinion, Wikipedia), we’ve heard that many readers enjoy having easy access to a diverse range of content types,” said Google in its blog spot enlightening the efforts the Internet giant has done to make news more relevant for the readers. Funnily enough, the latest Trump debacle has been reported to be misinforming people during the US Presidential election slated to happen in the near future – and Google is saving US citizens (and others who are interested as well) from making decisions in haste and confusion.

The Google News vertical has also explained the process the articles will now undergo to check whether it contains fact checks in part by looking for the ClaimReview markup. Meanwhile, Google will also look for the websites that follow the standard criteria for fact checking. The news websites and the publishers who enable fact-checks and are eager to see it appear with the “Fact check” tag have been advised by Google to use that markup in fact-check articles. So, if you are one of the publishers, you can head to Google’s help centre to know more on the procedure.

Germany Conducting Inquiry Into Tesla Autopilot System

Germany Conducting Inquiry Into Tesla Autopilot System

  • The driverless autopilot system has faced global scrutiny
  • In September a Tesla electric car crashed into a tourist bus
  • Tesla told by activists to disable autopilot feature until it is updated

Germany said Saturday it was still investigating the operation of the autopilot system on cars made by electric automaker Tesla, as German media reported an internal ministerial report called it “dangerous”.

According to the weekly news magazine Der Spiegel, an internal ministry report had concluded that the autopilot function represents “a considerable danger for traffic”, especially because the driver is not warned when the autopilot system is not able to handle a situation.

“The final evaluation of the transport ministry concerning the autopilot functioning of Tesla Model S cars is not yet ready,” the ministry told AFP, denying the reports that it had already concluded the probe.

Available for Tesla’s Model S electric cars since October 2015, the driverless autopilot system has faced global scrutiny following fatal crashes in northern China in January and in the US state of Florida in May.

In September a Tesla electric car crashed into a tourist bus on a motorway in northern Germany, after the driver who was the only one slightly injured claimed he had activated the autopilot system.

A Tesla spokesperson at the time said the driver told the company the autopilot was functioning properly and its use was unrelated to the accident.

And on Saturday a Tesla spokesman told AFP: “We have always been clear with our customers that Autopilot is a drivers assistance system that requires the driver to pay attention at all times.”

“Just as in an aeroplane, when used properly, autopilot reduces driver workload and provides an added layer of safety when compared to purely manual driving,” he added.

Consumer activists have called on the company, founded by PayPal billionaire Elon Musk, to disable the autopilot feature until it is updated to detect whether the driver’s hands are on the steering wheel during operation – as the company says should be the case.

Amazon’s Alexa Can Now Run on Your Windows, Mac, or Linux Machine

Amazon's Alexa Can Now Run on Your Windows, Mac, or Linux Machine

  • Developers can add Alexa voice assistant to desktops
  • Alexa can now be activated via voice commands on Raspberry Pi
  • Windows, Mac, Linux users need to push a button to activate Alexa

Amazon has opened up its Alexa voice-controlled virtual assistant to Windows, Mac, and Linux users, in addition to giving the the software more power on Raspberry Pi. The company has released the code for the hands-free version of Alexa for Raspberry Pi on GitHub, while Windows, Mac, and Linux users will have to make do with pressing a button to turn on the digital assistant.

Alexa support for Raspberry Pi has been available for a few months now, but there was no provision for making it hands-free and voice controlled. Users had to wake up Alexa by pressing an on-screen button. With the new code, Amazon has provided developers support for make the software always listen for the ‘hot word,’ in this case “Alexa”, similar to what you get with Amazon’s popular Echo, Dot, and Tap devices.

The online retail giant has integrated two wake word engines in the code: TrulyHandsFree from Sensory, and Snowboy from KIIT.AI. Users will need to say the Alexa hot word in a conversational three times in order to train the software to pick up their voice so that it wakes up on command.

On the other hand, the always-on functionality will be absent from the release for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Amazon has not said whether it will make Alexa hands-free on these desktops anytime soon, though given improvements in the Raspberry Pi project, that’s likely. The company has said that the code released on GitHub is for tinkering only, and not meant for commercial use.

With Alexa on the desktop, users will, theoretically, be able to ask Alexa for the weather or look up information on the Internet, etc., and perform other tasks that Amazon’s other Alexa-based devices can do. It does not ‘integrate’ with your desktop machine in any way.

Apple brought Siri to the desktop with last month’s macOS Sierra update. Google Now, the Internet search giant’s digital assistant, was released for the desktop version of the Chrome browser in 2014, but Google killed it off last year saying few users ever clicked on the notifications.
