BENGALURU: For all those looking for sports and fitness, from marathons to tournaments, Bengaluru’s sports and fitness sector is now on a mobile application developed by three youngsters who claim it can help one collect the information instantly.

The app — Spyn — is the brainchild of three young technocrats including two alumni of IIM-A, Nayan Karnavat and Ravindra Kumar, and, Sudarshan Karnavat, an alumnus of Mumbai University, who have developed the app through their startup Atzos Ventures Private Limited, registered in Bengaluru.

Toshiba Considering Splitting Off Chip Business and Listing It

Toshiba Corp said on Friday it was considering splitting off part of its chip business, with listing it an option, in a move that would help it raise capital needed to fund restructuring following a $1.3 billion accounting scandal.

Toshiba is in urgent need of restructuring after profit-padding revealed a number unprofitable businesses. It agreed in October to sell its image sensor business to Sony Corp.

The accounting scandal rendered Toshiba on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s so-called watch list, meaning the conglomerate is almost unable to raise funds by selling shares or bonds, to bolster capital which could be depleted by restructuring.

“We would consider selling every asset that is possible to sell,” Chief Executive Masashi Muromachi said at an analyst briefing.

He also said NAND flash memory chips comprised a core part of Toshiba’s business and would not be sold.

That effectively leaves system LSI and discrete chips as options to be split off.

Toshiba earlier this month reported a second-quarter operating loss and said it has sued five former executives, including three former chief executive officers, over their roles in a $1.3 billion (roughly Rs. 8,683 crores) accounting scandal.

The laptops-to-nuclear power conglomerate posted an operating loss of JPY 79.5 billion ($645.66 million or roughly Rs. 4,320 crores) in the July-September second half of the current fiscal year that began in April. That compared with a JPY 90.2 billion profit a year earlier.

The dismal results mainly reflect sluggish sales of home appliances and a writedown for the point-of-sale information system business.

Toshiba also said it is seeking damages from the five former executives for mismanagement. A panel set up by Toshiba found previous CEO Hisao Tanaka and his two predecessors had played a part in the overstatement of profits.

Sony a68 SLT Camera With 4D Focus System Launched

Sony last week announced a new addition to its single-lens translucent (SLT) lineup of Alpha cameras, the a68. The camera features Sony’s 4D Focus system and is compatible with A-mount lenses. The a68 will go on sale in Europe starting March 2016 for roughly EUR 600 (approximately Rs. 42,800) for just the body and EUR 700 (approximately Rs. 50,000) with an 18-55mm, F3.5-5.6 SAM II kit lens.

The Sony a68 is part of Sony’s SLT lineup of cameras which look like DSLRs but don’t function exactly like them. This is because the mirror in the a68 is fixed, unlike a traditional DSLR, and it also features phase-detection autofocus (AF) module that can do continuous AF, even when shooting. This works by sending the image through the mirror’s translucent surface to the APS-C sensor as well as the dedicated autofocus system in the camera.

Sony’s new entrant borrows some features of the a77 II like the 79-point autofocus system and the 24-megapixel Exmor sensor. It features an ISO range of 100-25,600 and Bionz X image processor. The camera also supports full-HD video recording up to 50Mbps in XAVC S format.

The a68 features a 2.7-inch TFT LCD display with a resolution of 460k dots and can be tilted. You also get an electronic viewfinder, which is an Oled panel with a resolution of 1.4 million dots and offers 100 percent frame coverage.

Thanks to the translucent mirror, the Sony a86 is capable of 8FPS burst mode with continuous autofocus. The camera is also compatible with all 34 A-mount lenses that Sony offers. Other features include a rear and front control wheel for quick adjustments, 10 customisable buttons, SteadyShot Inside for image stabilisation, a built-in flash, and a multi-interface shoe for use with microphones and other accessories.

One of the key features of the new Apple TV is its universal search offering. Instead of fetching content from one source – or requiring users to open half a dozen apps manually and make the searches there – the Apple TV automatically taps iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, HBO and several other popular services to list down the availability of your desired content. At the time of its announcement, however, Apple hadn’t announced whether this capability will be expanded to include additional content sources. The answer is yes.

In an interview with Buzzfeed News, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed some additional details on the Apple TV. Cook noted that developers will be able to make their content available to universal search using an upcoming API. “At launch we’ll have iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, and HBO — so we’ll have five major inputs into universal search initially,” he said. “But we’re also opening an API, so that others can join in.”

Cook is hopeful that many developers will join and make their content available to universal search. “I think that many, many people will want to be in that search,” Cook said. “And that’s great for users. Think about your experience today. Even if you’re fortunate enough to have the content you want to watch in an app, you sometimes don’t remember exactly where that show is, so you’re going to Netflix or Hulu or Showtime. You shouldn’t have to do that. It should be very simple.”

The Apple CEO also said that universal search will become intelligent enough over time to know the services a user is subscribed to, and tell a user if the content is available for free or with their existing subscriptions. For instance, if some episodes or seasons of a show are available via one service and rest available through a different service or subscription plan, the universal search will be able to tell.

The company unveiled the new Apple TV at its mega September 9 event. The new media-streaming device offers significant hardware improvements while also getting an iOS 9-powered tvOS which comes with its own user interface and apps. The Apple TV is also being marketed as a game console. It will go on sale in several regions (India not on the list as of yet) starting this month.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to Visit Mumbai on November 5

Microsoft chief Satya Nadella will meet industry leaders like Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, Axis Bank head Shikha Sharma and Tata Starbucks CEO Avani Davda during his one-day visit to India on November 5.

The India-born CEO will also deliver a keynote address at ‘Microsoft’s Future Unleashed’ event here that will bring together 3,000 industry thought leaders, enterprise heads, developers and entrepreneurs.

“Satya is in India on a one-day visit to Mumbai to deliver a keynote at Microsoft’s Future Unleashed. During the day, he is expected to meet key industry leaders like Anand Mahindra, Shikha Sharma, Mukund Rajan, Brand Custodian & Spokesperson, Tata Group, among others,” Microsoft India General Manager (Marketing and Operations) Tyler Bryson told PTI.

He will also be meeting key government stakeholders and Microsoft customers and partners during the event, he added. Last week, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg also visited India and addressed a Townhall at IIT-Delhi. Apart from meeting business and political leaders, the young billionaire also spent time with developers.

Talking about the Microsoft event, Bryson said the two-day event will explore how technology is empowering people and organisations across sectors like government, education, banks, hospitals, eCommerce, entertainment and manufacturing.

“In line with the same, we will be making a range of announcements during the two days (November 5-6),” he said.

Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Cloud and Enterprise Group at Microsoft Corporation will also deliver a keynote speech.

There will also be a series of keynotes and inspirational talks by industry luminaries, policy makers and business leaders, he said.

Asus ZenPad 7.0 and ZenPad 8.0 India Availability Detailed

Asus India on Friday finally revealed the availability of its ZenPad 7.0 (Z370CG) and ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL) tablets for the Indian market alongside launching the ZenPad C 7.0 (Z170CG). Both the tablets were initially announced for India in August.

The Taiwanese manufacturer confirmed that the ZenPad 7.0 will be available starting Friday itself. The ZenPad 8.0 and ZenPad C 7.0 tablets on the other hand will go on sale by end of October. All three new ZenPad tablets will be available via exclusive Asus stores and Flipkart.

As before, the Asus ZenPad 7.0 (Z370CG) will come at Rs. 11,999 and the tablet will also be available with a bundled Audio Cover at Rs. 14,999. The tablet will come in Obsidian Black and Aurora Metallic colours. The Asus ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL) has been is priced at Rs. 14,999 and with an Audio Cover at Rs. 17,999. It will be available in two colours – Obsidian Black and Aurora Metallic. The ZenPad C 7.0, priced at Rs. 8,999, comes in three colours – Obsidian Black, Glamour Red, Aurora Metallic.

All these tablets were showcased at Computex 2015 trade show this year. The tablets come integrated with DTS-HD Premium Sound technology, which the company touts is a highlight of both the devices.

The Asus ZenPad 7.0 (Z370CG) features a 7-inch (1280×800 pixels) HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass for protection. It is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom x3-C3230 processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. It comes with 8GB or 16GB of built-in storage that’s expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). It sports an 8-megapixel rear and there is a 2-megapixel front camera also on board. The Android 5.0 Lollipop-based tablet runs Zen UI on top. The ZenPad 7.0 (Z370CG) supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and Micro-USB connectivity options. The tablet also comes with Micro-SIM and support GPRS/ EDGE and 3G via SIM. For battery life, Asus claims that the ZenPad 7.0 can deliver up to 8 hours battery life and comes with 13Wh Li-polymer battery. It measures 189×110.9×8.7mm and weighs 272 grams.

The ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL) comes with LTE connectivity along with a Micro-SIM slot. It runs on a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 (MSM8929) processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. It features an 8-inch 1280×800 pixel LED-backlit IPS display and comes with 16GB of storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 64GB). Apart from 4G, connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB, GPS, and Glonass. It bears a 2-megapixel front camera, and an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus. It measures 209x123x8.5 mm and weighs 350 grams. Its 15.2Whr battery is rated to deliver up to 9 hours of battery life.

Finally, the new Asus ZenPad C 7.0 features a 7-inch 1024×600 pixel LED-backlit IPS display, and is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom x3-C3230 processor, with 1GB of RAM, and a choice of 8GB of storage that is expandable via microSD card (up to 64GB).

Connectivity options on the ZenPad C 7.0 (Z170CG) include Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB, GPS/ A-GPS, and Glonass. It bears a 0.3-megapixel front camera, and a 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus. It measures 189x108x8.4mm, and weighs 265 grams. Its 13Whr battery is rated to deliver up to 8 hours of battery life. The Asus ZenPad C 7.0 (Z170CG) also sports 3G connectivity and comes with two Micro-SIM card slots.

 

New Computer Chip Can Self-Destruct in Seconds

A new computer chip made of tempered glass that self destructs in seconds when remotely triggered could keep sensitive date secure, researchers say.

The new method uses silicon computer wafers attached to a piece of tempered glass that shatters into small pieces when heated in one spot.

The heat can be turned on via a remote, which in the future could conceivably be triggered by anything from Wi-Fi to a radiofrequency signal, said Gregory Whiting, a materials scientist and manager of the Novel Electronics Group that produced the chip at PARC, a California-based company.

The new technology could allow for easier recycling of electronics, or help ensure that data on stolen electronics remains secure, Whiting said. The researchers decided to use tempered glass, an extra strength material also known as safety glass, to make self-destructing electronics, ‘Live Science’ reported.

Normally, glass is tempered by cooling the edges: The glass exterior shrinks, putting the exterior into compression while the warmer interior maintains incredible tensile stress. Though the glass is stronger than normal, “if you break a piece of safety glass, it kind of explodes, shatters explosively into little pieces,” Whiting said.

Because glass is a poor temperature conductor, the heat-tempering process only works with pieces of glass that are at least 0.03 inches thick, whereas producing tiny particles requires thinner materials.

The team used a different method, called ion exchange, to temper the glass. The researchers started with a thin piece of glass that was rich in sodium ions, or atoms of sodium with one electron stripped off.

They then put the glass into a hot bath of potassium nitrate. Potassium ions then try to swap places with the sodium ions, but because the heftier potassium ions must squeeze into place within the silicon matrix, this creates enormous tension in the glass, Whiting said.

The new method allows for either attaching silicon wafers directly to the glass, or fabricating the two together. To induce chip suicide, the team triggers the chip with a tiny heating element, which causes a thermal shock that creates a fracture that spreads throughout the glass. Anything from Wi-Fi to radio waves could send the kill signal to the chip, Whiting said.

Apple TV, iPad Pro to Launch in Late October: Report

Apple is reportedly set to make the Apple TV and iPad Pro tablet available with Apple Retail Stores in the first week of next month. The two devices are said to hit retail shelves only after their online launch later this month.

The online orders for the new Apple TV and iPad Pro would start shipping from first week November itself, reports 9to5Mac. Apple is yet to confirm the plans. The firm previously said it would make the Apple TV and the iPad Pro available for purchase sometime in October and November respectively.

Apple at the time of launch said the iPad Pro will ship in Silver, Gold, Space Grey colours at a price of $799 (roughly Rs. 51,700) for 32GB storage (Wi-Fi only), $949 (roughly Rs. 61,500) for 128GB storage (Wi-Fi only), and $1,079 (roughly Rs. 70,000) for 128GB storage Wi-Fi+LTE variant. The Apple TV would start at $149 (roughly Rs. 9,600).

For those unaware, Apple launched its iPad Pro tablet last month alongside the iPad mini 4, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and the new Apple TV. The tablet features a 12.9-inch 2732×2048 pixel display and is powered by a new “desktop class” A9X chip, which is 1.8X times faster than its predecessor in CPU tasks. Apple also announced the Apple Pencil, a stylus for the iPad Pro.

The Apple TV set-top box features an A8 SoC and will be available in 32GB and 64GB storage variants. The home entertainment system supports full-HD resolution displays, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, USB Type-C port, and HDMI v1.4 connectivity. It comes with a new Siri Remote, which features motion controls via the gyroscope and accelerometer, and also includes a touchpad, apart from enabling voice-based search, playback, and navigation via two microphones for Siri.

Apple is now also being rumoured to launch its anticipated 21.5-inch 4K display iMac next week. Apple apparently has plans to launch it with availability beginning as soon as October 13.
