The FDA has previously approved medical devices – including prosthetics – made with 3D printing. An agency spokeswoman confirmed the new drug is the first prescription tablet approved that uses the process.

Aprecia said in a statement it plans to develop other medications using its 3D platform in coming years, including more neurological drugs. The company is privately owned.

Doctors are increasingly turning to 3D printing to create customized implants for patients with rare conditions and injuries, including children who cannot be treated with adult-size devices. The FDA held a workshop last year for medical manufacturers interested in the technology.

“This is the first on-chip sputum liquefier anyone has developed so far,” Huang said.

There are several issues with the current standard method for sputum analysis.

The first is that human specimens can be contagious, and sputum analysis requires handling of specimens in several discrete machines.

With this device, all biospecimens are safely contained in a single disposable component.

Another issue is the sample size required for analysis in the current system, which is often larger than a person can easily produce.

The acoustofluidic sputum liquefier created by Huang’s group requires 100 times less sample while still providing accuracy equivalent to the standard system, the study said.

A further issue is that current systems are difficult to use and require trained operators.

With the lab-on-a-chip system, a nurse can operate the device with a touch of a few buttons and get a read out, or the patient could even operate the device at home, said the study published in the journal Lab on a Chip

Nasa scientists have captured a peanut-shaped asteroid that approached close to Earth last weekend. The next time an asteroid will approach Earth this close will be in 2054.The asteroid named 1999 JD6 appears to be a contact binary – an asteroid with two lobes that are stuck together.

On July 24, the asteroid made its closest approach to Earth at a distance of about 7.2 million kms, or about 19 times the distance from Earth to the moon.

“Radar imaging has shown that about 15 percent of near-Earth asteroids larger than 600 feet, including 1999 JD6, have this sort of lobed, peanut shape,” said Lance Benner of Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, in a statement.

To obtain the views, researchers paired Nasa’s Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, California with the National Science Foundation Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia.

The images show the asteroid is highly elongated, with a length of approximately two kms on its long axis.

“It’s a list of 857 URLs. Most of the sites [on the list] are pornographic. I would say 100% of the sites,” a senior manager of an ISP, who did not want to be named, told Legally India.

Later reports have confirmed this with three ISPs all saying that the order was received late on Friday, which is why the blocks appear to be taking place in a slapdash fashion right now. The list of URLs that the government has ordered to be blocked is not available at the moment.

“We track all the orbiters much more closely now. There’s still a low probability of needing a manoeuvre, but it’s something we need to manage,” said Shotwell.

Traffic management at Mars is much less complex than in Earth orbit, where more than 1,000 active orbiters plus additional pieces of inactive hardware add to hazards.

As Mars exploration intensifies, though, and will continue to do so with future missions, precautions are increasing.

The new process was established to manage this growth as new members are added to the Mars orbital community in years to come, Nasa said.
